How to Stay Sane Working Remotely/Home During Quarantine: Tips & Tricks
Share
If you are like many people you're working from home, or if you're not working from home you might be just home. Maybe you don't have work, and a lot of my friends have lost jobs or they are furloughed for 90 days. Either way, many of us are stuck at home and still need to be productive for our work. This is honestly uncharted territory for a lot of people. It is very easy to go absolutely insane working from home. So let me share with you how to stay sane, how to stay productive with 4 simple thoughts that will help you if you are stuck at home & need to get work done.
The common denominator in all these tips is going to be separation. The good thing about working from an office or a remote location is that, its separation. You go to work and then you can come home. This is why most people don't like to work from home, because there is no separation. So what we need to do is create separation.
#1 Create a separate, dedicated work space
Wherever you are, even in a studio apartment you need to make room for your workspace. It might be right next to your bed, in a spare bedroom, in your living room corner, but it's still a dedicated space. When you go to this space, you know it's time to work. You associate sitting there with being productive so you will get things done, trust me. Do not stay in bed & work!! This is a bad idea!
#2 Create Dedicated Work Hours
People are creatures of habit. So making sure you have a routine is very important when working from home. You need to treat yourself like a professional even when you're working from home. So, maintain hours & let the people you live with know that you're unavailable during these hours. Don't forget to add in your lunch break! Come up with those hours & communicate those hours to your loved ones. This way no one will have hard feelings.
#3 Create Dedicated Social Media/Email Time
Personally, I don't like to check my emails till lunch time. I come in, do the most important things first. This way I feel super productive. No matter what happens after lunch I got the most important things done in the morning. As well as, at the end of the day, i'll check my emails/news/social media to kind of wrap things up.
#4 Take 5-10min Breaks Every 90 Minutes
Do not work for a 2 hour stretch. It is so healthier & studies have shown that when you take a 5-10 minute break where you stand up (especially if you're sitting) walk out of your work area, stretch, get fresh air, get some water, grab a snack. (DON'T GET ON YOUR PHONE). That taking a physical break will clear your head, because when you come back to work your focus will still be there. Stay fresh. Be disciplined to take those breaks every hour or hour and a half. This will help you stay sane & productive!
